I can walk safely on the streets of Singapore at 2 o'clock in the morning like what I have done many times from the Chinatown rail station to home. The station is granite clean without a spot of graffiti. I can walk by a vendor an purchase a tandoori chicken or a some other local dish as a late night snack. In a sense I feel very safe with my family.
There is no way in hell that I would do that on Flinders Street station. For a first world nation, the station has the smell of urine and has graffiti plastered all over the walls and while gangs around vandalising ticket machines et al. I would not feel safe there at all.
The feel safer in Asia is because they will apprehend the criminals and send them away as to Australian laws the criminals are treated more like some "victim of circumstance" and is given virtually no sentence easily to reoffend.

What Australia claims as inhumane does not have the right to pontificate over other countries. Australia has shown many times that they are as inhumane as any other country in the world.
