My mother's father was Jewish. Even worse, he was a socialist. That meant that he was virtually living in constant hiding. He had to disappear as soon as Hitler occupied Hungary. But even before that, he and the whole family was already suffering from the successions of anti Jewish laws brought down by the Hungarian government in support of Hitlers policies in Germany.
Here is an example: Although my grandmother was not Jewish (lower middle clbutt Hungarian family, one brother in the military, an other brother on the advisory staff to Horthy the Regent of and all members of the family were Catholic my aunt was refused university entry despite of finishing high school with high distinction. That was the direct result of the first and second wave of anti Jewish legistlations.
