A mate teaches at a government school where the skips are in a minority, most of the students come from a Vietnamese or Lao background.
He said the first generation, children of boatpeople after the fall of Saigon, were wonderful to teach, they were respectful and conscientious, imbudued with Confucian values. Their parents told them the teacher was to be respected even more than the parents themselves, because they were providing the education which would improve their lives.
The next generation were completely buttimilated. Rude, disrespectful, loud and more interested in sport, love and drugs than in learning.
Why do you think four of the top 20 schools in Victoria, as measured by the addmittedly crude VCE TER 'league tables' are Jewish schools? And most of the others are religious schools, including an Islamic college?
In those subcultures, respect is given to the learned. The very term Rabbi, means 'teacher'. Those students are raised by people who believe, and act, as if teachers, doctors and lawyers are more to be admired than football players, TV celebrities and Paris Hilton.
Thats why I laugh so hard when the redneck bigots insist that softly spoken, well educated migrants should become 'just like ferdie or Chris Cooley' B^D
