Mr Goh, who visited Hougang on Sunday to bolster the campaign of PAP's Eric Low, also clarified a remark he had made there about the possibility of lifting the Whip on Mr Low and Mr Sitoh to give them a free voice. He said he had been responding to a question to the effect that some people wanted an Opposition presence, but at the same time wanted estate upgrades. . "I thought: 'Well, you can have the best of both worlds. You can have upgrading and then if you elect Sitoh Yih Pin or Eric Low, we can lift the Whip on them'," said Mr Goh. . "But let's be clear ... they are PAP MPs. So it's not quite the same as an Opposition MP. But what I hope (they) will do, regardless of the Whip being lifted or not, is speak their minds frankly." . The important thing, he said, was that to establish himself as an MP, Mr Sitoh must not come across as a yes-man. In that sense, Mr Goh said, the Whip was immaterial. What mattered was whether Mr Sitoh was willing to speak out, even on issues on which he had a different view from the Party and the Government.
