I agree with you but to a point..

Having a condition that they should be Australian citizens takes away that freedom of choice. The same circumstances then could be said to many America that also have lived outside of Australia for decades. Those in Dubai are receiving great salaries with no taxes.

There is a condition in a way that you might consider as an "expirary date". When a person receives their residency, they are allowed to leave Australia any time they like. They are allowed into Australia any time before a 5-year cut off date from the date of the residency approval.

After that date, the permanent resident must renew the residency costing about a couple hundred dollars and then they are allowed for another 5-years to enter in and out of Australia. Should they be outside Australia and have not renewed the residency, they will have to reapply from scratch costing thousands of dollars and join the queue for residency possibly taking years.

This is designed so the residents are encouraged to become Australian citizens should they wish to make Australia their home. This clause is not widely known and I believe that a number of those residents who are facing deportation are just making waves to stay in Australia.

Australia should NOT bend at all to permanent residents who wish to flout with their residency conditions that are stipulated to them upon approval. If they came in as children then it is up to the parents to teach them the basic facts of their residency and also the parents should have taken citizenship for their children's sake.
