Interesting to not that the financial backer made an apology to the judge for alledging a bribe was to be met so who was perverting the cause of justice.
Countries in South East Asian have corruption but so does many western countries such as Australia has corruption.

Once again that aid money is NOT going to the Indonesian government but to the people and that does NOT give us the right to steam roll over the justice system of Indonesia.

Her story was too flimsy against the prosecution and to accept evidence from another country is useless despite that the court actually allowed it where this would not happen in Australia.
Australin recent history showed that the media accused the Chinese female swimmers for bringing in banned steroids into the country. The media gave them absolutely hell that they were guilty. Tests showed that they were in accordance to the regulations and therefore they were allowed. How quiet the media was.
I would wonder if a buxom Indonesian girl would get the same justice if she was "Schapelled" at Sydney or Melbourne Airport?
I told my kids the dangers of taking and trafficking drugs so there was no need to lie at all. My 11-year old daughter's reply (which would have been the most intelligent answer I have ever heard in this forum) was that I should not worry and that she will never go near that stuff.
I first learned about drug trafficking in my early teens by watching Midnight Express and later Bangkok Hilton and I am glad that the smart gene was pbutted.
Maybe Australia should have strict laws such as in South East Asia.

Put this into an Australian analogy.....
Abu Bakar Bashir would be the leader of the "Right to Life" organisation and suggested to their members to blow up a end clinic or kill the doctors involved. Should something like that happened in Australia a court case in Australia could not even charge him with the liquidates but maybe for "inciting violence" which would be a maximum term of 3 years because there would be no evidence of plant making or any of the components would be there to go against him.
Legal Aid etc are only available to Australia citizen or those in permant or temporary residence. They are not allowed to those who just got caught for trafficking in drugs at the airport who are not the above.
Let's compare... The justice system in Melbourne in the past year.
A woman was given a suspended sentence for having love with a minor boy. After heavy public pressure, the justice system increased the sentence and gave her a jail term.
Last year a woman broke into the apartment of a woman and digitally raped her. The offender pleaded guilty and the judge gave him a suspended sentence. The judge also quoted to the offender to "have a good Life"
Just less than a month ago a young teenage was attempting dissolution because the judge forced her to relive her story infront of her accuser (which happens to be her father) when they could have used a CCTV system. The event let her to attempt dissolution.
You now complain about the justice system from another country when it is easily seen just how impertious out own justice system is.

That is not the problem of John Howard but the problem with the justice system of Australia in general.
Maybe you would not have the problem if the penalties are more stiffer.
