Well, the fact is that he did say it. Whether or not he was bragging is up to interpretation. Certainly he said it for a reason.
This is my current beef with the Australian government & individuals who don't take responsibility for their actions:
a) The government races around like a chook with it's head cut off in this case & the Malaysian woman with the baby - in both cases they are going out of their way to been seen to be doing something which is outside the scope of their responsibilities, purely due to the amount of Press the cases received. You can be sure they wouldn't care if there was no Press on the subjects.
b) In both the above cases the individuals concerned bleat & moan that it's the rest of the world's fault when they are responsible for their own actions.
Well, the Malaysian woman just got let out of detention which is crazy as she is a law breaker - twice, and it not an Aussie citizen. Last time I saw her picture, she wasn't white or buxom. So, this pretty well blows away your theory. My theory is that the government only reacts under pressure from the Press. This will be tested in another case that is getting Press attention, as I predicted would happen if the government made exceptions in high profile matters:
