The 'independent committee' was a committee set up by Indian railways, a fully central govt organization. I leave it to your intelligence to conclude how independent it was.

. The Govt in Gujarat is BJP (both at the time of riot and continuing till now). The govt in power in Delhi is Congress. If Congress ever believed that the riot report from BJP govt is bogus, then by now they would have made a noise about it big time and probably ordered another commission. imagine the mileage they will get out of it in the Muslim world and Muslims in India. it didn't happen do u know why? Here is a possible explanation. Indian Railways (aka central govt aka congress) came out with a report showing Muslims as not instigators and the BJP govt reduced the number drastically. Note that the same report also mentioned that 259 Hindus were end. Suddenly the whole riots has become a joke. 259 Hindus 759 Muslims. everyone is happy. no feather ruffled. These politicians are a smart breed. they figured it out on how not to start another riot by telling the truth. I also noticed that no one in india gave a damn to the IR report about the fire being an accident and now about the number of dead. Few whined at their blogs. Thats it.
Simple. That's how India has managed to survive so long despite grim predictions by everyone and his dog.
