BAJRANG DAL ROWDIES ATTACK CHRISTIAN PASTOR

MUMBAI: Bajrang Dal activists beat up three people who were distributing copies of the Bible as part of their Christmas outreach program in Panvel last week. The activists took the injured persons to the Panvel police station and lodged a complaint against them.

Police said the pastor of the Brethren Church at Panvel and two engineers, who were church members (none of whom want to be named for fear of their lives), were distributing copies of the Bible from a jeep behind the Panvel ST bus stand on November 26.

"Some people surrounded us and told us that the Bible doesn't mention the names of their gods and started beating us up," said one.

The Bajrang Dal activists then took the injured men to the Panvel police station and a non-cognisable complaint was lodged against them on the grounds that they were making abusive remarks about other religions.

The police later registered a complaint against the same Bajrang Dal activists who had brought the victims to the police station, only now their whereabouts were Òunknown".

When asked why the police did not arrest the activists when they came to the police station, zonal DCP Pravin Pawar said, "There was a complaint against the Christian people too, so we could not arrest the Bajrang Dal activists. There is no sign of them now."
