SAN FRANCISCO, July 20PRNewswire-- Ten thousands of Buddhists in more than 45 countries will meditate simultaneously for more compbuttion and understanding among mankind, starting Sunday, 24 June 2005. In the US, Western Buddhists in more than 27 centres will meditate together for a better world. "We want to create a power-field of positive energy which will be useful for all people", said Jesper Jorgensen from the Buddhist Centre in San Francisco. The starting shot for the meditation marathon takes place in the German city of Kbuttel, however. There, Europe's largest annual Buddhist gathering with several thousand participants is under way.
"It just feels good to do something meaningful together. Besides, the event creates a feeling of togetherness with idealistic people from all over the world", said Jorgensen.
The meditation of the Buddha of limitless compbuttion ('Chenrezig' in Tibetan) has been practised in the Karma Kagyu Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in a similar form since the 12th century. Starting Sunday night, the participants of the marathon will recite the mantra of compbuttion "Om Mani Peme Hung" for three days and nights in changing shifts and counting the repebreastions. All over the world, more than 100 million mantras are expected to come together.
The event has been initiated by Lama Ole Nydahl. The 63 year old Dane was trained a Buddhist Lama by the Karmapa, the head of the Tibetan Karma Kagyu Tradition, 35 years ago. Since then, he has been travelling around the world, following the wishes of his teachers and founding Buddhist Centres.
