Mimick or whatever you may call it, what is more important is taht it works. Many successful people or nations do learn from good practices of others and modify them to suit their own needs and situation. There is nothing wrong with that. A nations where the leaders are willing to learn from others and to adapt systems and practices which work well for the nations and the people are great leaders who deserve to be praised and respected. Chinese leaders from the post-Mao era till now, have been practising what Deng Xiaopeng siad "Crossing the river step by step by touching the stone" and that "A cat is a good cat as long as it can catch the mouse, regardless of its colour".
China has developed a very good system of self renewal at the highest echelon of leadership. Durign post-Mao era, till now, no top leader has been holding on to the post till they died. All of them have been handling over the job to the younger generations willingly. Such a system is hard to find elsewhere on this planet.
needed democracy
Don't be blinded by your belief. I have known of many such situations in democratuic Russia, India, The Philippines, Malaysia, etc. etc. Adjustment of market economy(or whatever you may call it!) is never smooth sailing in any nation on this planet.
