You intentionally ignored the most important reason, i.e. U.S. of A. was the FOREIGN invaders in this war. The affairs of Vietnam should be decided by Vietnam people and Vietnam army rather than a bunch of foreign armed forces. The sovereignty and integrity of any country should be respected whether this country is strong or week. This is the international law. China always try her best for the peaceful unification and that is the official policy for at least two decades. Most of the exchanges between mainland China and Taiwan are one direction and a lot of them are favor to Taiwan, e.g. people visit each other, the trade, the investment, the journalist visiting, etc, especially the trade. Without trading with mainland China, Taiwan would suffer the deficit rather than enjoys the surplus as it does. Taiwan government set very strict conditions for importing from China which China does not impose.
As about peaceful independence, China will not allow, neither the President Lincoln. Even FOREIGN imperialists make a big threat, this would not stop China to keep the integrity and sovereignty of her OWN country. Even weak Qing fought the wars before she lost lands, e.g. Taiwan (Jia Wu war, 1894) and HK (Opium war, 1840). So do not expect current China to lose her territory without a fight. For your reference, China is the only country who fought with both superpowers and won the wars. Do you know why USA never cross 17th line in the Vietnam war?
