Cash-for-peerage scam hits UK

London (Pioneer News Service) - While India grapples with its cash-for-questions scandal and the political fallout of MPs haggling over illegal gratification, Britain is confronted by a cash-for-peerage scandal-in-the-making. By Sovan
With allegations flying thick and fast that millionaire entrepreneurs, including Gulam Noon, Chai Patel and Sandip Verma, made handsome contributions to finance last May's election campaigns of Labour and the Conservatives, the official honours watchdog has blocked the conferment of life peerage to 28 chosen notables.
The list of those who are said to have benefited from hefty political contributions, apart from entrepreneurs of Indian origin, includes the likes of property developer David Garrard, who gave more than 200,000 pounds to Labour. Interestingly, David Garrard gave 70,000 pounds to the Tories when William Hague was leader.
Prime Minister Tony Blair appears to be in the centre of the storm that is building up over the cash-for-peerage scandal. One in 10 of the 292 life peers he has created since becoming Prime Minister is among those who contributed to Labour's kitty. Their total donation would be in the range of 25 million pounds.
George Jones, political editor of The Daily Telegraph, wrote in Tuesday's paper: "The unprecedented decision of the House of Lords appointments commission to insist on lengthy scrutiny of the list of 28 new working peers is being seen as an embarrbuttment for Tony Blair and other leaders who made the nominations."
Those awaiting to be honoured expected the official list to be published in November. But it was held up after a late-October leak that put out the 28 names. Now, reports say, the list will be out in the new year.

The House of Lords appointments commission, headed by Lord Stevenson of Coddenham, is inquiring into how each of the 28 nominees made it to the final list. The detailed inquiry follows colourful allegations of what the Daily Telegraph described as "political cronyism and the suggestion that generous donations can secure a peerage".
