Hyderabad, Aug. 30: The first Additional Metropolitan Senior Judge Kederachari on Monday sentenced Sister Teresa Maria Kattikaran and nine other women of Tender Loving Care Home to six months imprisonment in the sensational child trafficking racket that broke out in 2001. The Judge ordered that the other convicts K Showreela, Nagothu Rajulu, P. Vijaya Kumari, T. Vani, V.N.V. Narasamma, I. Sangeeta, P. Latha, J. Suguna and R. Nirmala pay Rs 1,000 each.

Another accused in the scandal, Sister Innamma, was acquitted while two other accused, Padmaja and Deepa, are still at large. On April 26, 2001, the CID police framed charges under Section 420 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code on Sister Teresa and 13 other women for operating a child adoption racket with criminal conspiracy and intention to make easy money.

The accused were found guilty of procuring 436 infants from Lambada Tandas in various Telangana districts and sending the same for foreign adoptions. The accused were allegedly in the infant trade since 1998 and the racket was exposed in 2001, following a complaint lodged by the Department of Women Development and Child Welfare. It is further said that the accused had procured the infants using fabricated adoption certificates. The court found that the Sister and the nine women illegally kidnapped the children from their lawful custody.
