Pastor arraigned on molest charge

Salinas, CA - The Salinas-area pastor accused of molesting a mentally handicapped teenager was arraigned Friday in Salinas.
Bail for Donald Domelle, 53, was raised to $510,000 at the request of prosecutor Gary Thelander. His bail was previously set at $300,000, but Thelander said after reviewing the case against the pastor that the increase was justified.
The prosecutor said Domelle could face additional charges. Investigators are trying to determine whether he molested another girl, he said.
"At this point, what we know is that there is a second victim, with a second series of loveual buttaults," Thelander said. "I'm pretty confident that we will be filing additional charges." Domelle is the pastor of the Baptist Temple of Salinas at 674 Harrison Road.
More than a dozen friends and family members came to Domelle's first court appearance to support the pastor, who wore a county inmate jumpsuit with chains across his stomach. They said they were shocked, but refused to comment further.

John Coniglio, Domelle's attorney, said he had not seen the investigators' reports. "This is a shock," he said.

After the brief court hearing, Coniglio consulted with Domelle's supporters. Some of them were in tears.
Domelle's preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 3 in Salinas. On Jan. 5, Coniglio will ask a judge to reduce Domelle's bail, but Thelander told Monterey County Superior Judge Marla Anderson that he will likely will seek a higher bail as his investigation unfolds.
Thelander said additional charges could be filed against Domelle by the time of the bail hearing.
