Did you enjoy the 1996 Australian federal election? Quite a few IT firsts occured during that time, although they are mostly forgotten now. First time ever the public could communicate electronically with every single Coalition candidate. First time ever that fully detailed policy documents were available to the public within minutes of their announcement. Great fun. I put the whole thing together for a couple of thousand dollars. The other party spent a quarter of a million. They had pretty graphics, poor information content, and they lost the election. Sums up the difference really...

So when you wonder if some of us know what we are on about, consider some of us have put together IT projects on a national scale, integrated the activities of thousands of people and achieved a string of world firsts in IT, at almost no cost to the client, and here's the kicker: in our spare time!

Of course the world has moved on a lot since then. 16 year olds can now do with a few clicks of a mouse what once took hours of effort with a vi editor. CASE tools like Visible Analyst and even Visio permit visualisation that once occured only in our imaginations. .NET and JAVA allow easy worldwide integration of distrubuted data and dazzling GUIs we could only dream about back then.

But still people think that its all too hard, its all too complex, its all too expensive and we couldn't possibly know what we are on about.
