At it's basic meaning, it is a struggle. In it's general use it is the struggle to be as good a person in your daily life in the name of allah, that you can be.

But you know fully well, that there are also Defensive jihad and Offensive jihad.

It is a fact that some muslims are cautious about quoting verses from the ahaadeeth on jihad as they are explicit in their meanings and so they either choose to ignore them, or misinterperet them - these would be your moderate muslims, and they are not considered true followers of islam by the MAJORITY of muslims around the world. But while they are cautious of these verses, they also know that they are true and so do not oppose muslims who do openly state and adhere to them.

Those who hold true the verses of the ahaadeeth on jihad are considered by the non-islamic world to be the persons and extremists, yet they are the fundamental core of islam as is written in the qur'an.

Allah commands that muslims must support islam and wage jihad against his enemies.

Defensive jihad is what is happening in Iraq right now; they feel islam is under attack and therefore are defending it (jihad ad-dafa). This is why so many foreign insurgets are there fighting also. It is the obligation of every muslim in a position to help, to undertake a defensive jihad.

Offensive jihad is spreading islam to non-muslim nations, and by showing how wonderfull and just islam is, the kaffir will adopt this religion and worship allah, denouncing all other false gods.

Anyone who does not willingly adopt such an obviously wondefull religion is the enemy if islam and then must either pay jizyah or be fought (jihad at-talab) until there is no more fitnah.

None of this has been abrogated and is the obligation of Every true muslim.

Do tell me where you find Christianity TODAY kidnapping people and beheading them for being non-believers. Tell me where in the Bible it states clearly that if they encounter a non-believer that unless they adopt Christianty or pay a tax to the Christian leaders, then they are the enemy, and must be fought.

I dont for one minute claim religion is sane, but why do you sort always do a comparison with Christianity when someone points out how bad Islam is. It's the equivalent of saying "I know you are but what am I?"
