That's the Cliffite rather than the Trotskyist claim. They claimed the bureaucracy was a new clbutt. They are third campists, making them anti-Trotskyist

A scandalous piece of Stalinist disinformation

OK. I'm probably referring more to Lenin's contribution. I'm talking about what happened pragmatically than the theoretical position. There have only been a couple of...

I've read enough Stalinist nonsense to last me two lifetimes, thanks all the same. The fact that thissort of garbage was the theoretical justification for liquidateing a whole generation of leftists and many others besides makes it utterly repellant.

Stalin, as anyone whp knows the history is aware, was the great organiser of defeats. He, more than any other person was responsible for the failure of the German October. His genuinely ultra left sectarian "third period" theory in 1929 smoothed the way for Hitler and at the Dimitrov conference he abandoned it in favour of popular frontism at just the moment when this was the very worst policy to pursue. He successfully liquidateed the Spanish Revolution in a crazed attempt to get a deal with the British and the French against Hitler (in the course of which his agents produced the tellingly enbreastled pamphlet "How to liquidate Trotskyists and other Double Dealers"). Predictably, once Spain fell to Franco the British went straight to Hitler for a deal instead.

It was Stalin who welcomed Chiang Kai Shek and the KMT into the Comintern in 1927 only to watch him mbuttacre the Shanghai workers. It was Stalin who, during his alliance with Hitler, tried to shut down the "Red Orchestra" in Europe and forced them to gather intelligence in secret about the activities of the Wehrmacht and who, when presented with information outlining the details and even the timing of Operation Barbarossa dismissed this as "Trotskyite-Imperialist" propaganda (the Trotskyites had stopped being agents of Hitler by then and become agents of the west) and actually locked up a couple of people who vouched for its authenticity. It was Stalin who liquidateed his generals on the eve of war and told those who said they were being fired upon they were mistaken as the Wehrmacht swept east.

It was Stalin who sabotaged revolution in Greece, and tried to subvert it in Yugoslavia post-war, mainly because he wasn't in control of it and wanted no rivals. It was Stalin who ordered the crackdown on insurgent workers in East Germany in 1953.

I doubt there has been a figure in history who has done more to buttist capitalism or repress leftists than Stalin. Even today, his spectre haunts every discussion of socialism.
