The line may or may not be viable, but it's not necessarily "ultra-left". In many of the cases with which I'm familiar, it was essentially conceived as a pressure tactic to narrow the scope for the Trade Union leadership to keep a lid on militancy, to pressure them to the left, and disrupt their policy of reliance on the courts and the ALP. In many cases of course, it was pure posturing, as they had not a flyspeck's chance in hell of getting any significant section of the TU bureaucracy to support the call, but that just makes it silly, not ultra left. An "ultra left" position would be to attempt to organise a general strike without having any piolitical means to do so and to attempt to set up picket lines wiothout workers, call for withdrawal from the unions for the refusal of the TU leadership to be involved, refusal to accept lesser means to prosecute a dispute etc.

Trotskyists aren't for subsbreastionism. And I know of no claimant to the breastle who does.
Of the current groups claiming Trotskyism, with the possible exception of the Northites, who occasionally pretend they are a lot bigger than they are, and the DSP who are buried deep in other organisations, all have the posture of "fighting propaganda groups" rather than mbutt parties.
And I'm not sure that the DSP call themselves Trotskyist any more.
I'm an independent leftist who, many years ago, was a Trotskyist. I accept Marxist methodology as key to understanding the nature of the world and regard the contributions of Lenin and Trotsky to Marxism as significant, though I see myself as most sympathetic to anarchism these days.
