By the very use of the word "medication" you apply a beneficial connotation to the subject. "Medication" infers something that is used to *treat* a disease or problem, not exasperate it.
You equate administering the cause of the problem, as administering the treatment of the problem. Hence your faulty use of the term "self-medicating alcoholic".

Valium is used to 'treat' thing things such as anxiety disorders, not to exasperate them.
You dont give someone who is addicted to Valium, more valium. You taper them off it, so as to break the addiction and find an alternative to help their situation
