By Steve Chilton IcCoventry June 30 2005 The man who today was awarded record damages for being loveually abused by a Coventry priest began his campaign for justice 13 years ago -- by telling his story to the Evening Telegraph.
The police had been foiled in their attempt to arrest Fr Christopher Clonan -- he had fled and was never to be see again in this country -- and the then 22-year-old was gripped by anger, despair and frustration.
His account of the abuse he suffered from the age of about seven through to his late teenage years was all the more chilling for its soft-spoken delivery. But when the memories became too painful, Mr A a tall, good-looking man dressed in denims, would explode in anger.
He told how the abuse started with fondling when he was just an ordinary kid with Irish parents living in the Coundon area, where Christ the King Church and social club was and still is, at the heart of the community.
He was groomed by the buttistant parish priest by being given pocket money for odd jobs at the church and club.
Mr A told us at the time: "He's a manipulative bastard. He knows how to handle people very well. He knows how to pick a small boy up, abuse him and teach him things. Little ways of 'speaking' to each other without speaking.
"If people are in the room and he wants to have love that night he would go about eye to eye contact...he's very clever in manipulating people."
By the age of 12 the abuse had progressed to the most serious loveual buttault. He said: "It took place at Christ the King Community centre, and the church. Then (when he was older) he was flying me over to Ireland to his luxury home in County Meath.
"And then he would have me driving his cars, his Jaguar and Triumph Stag and he would bring me back to his house (in Coventry) each night and do the same things to me and give me money each time."
By that time Mr A was addicted to LSD and ecstasy and needed the cash to feed his habit. He was about 18 when the abuse ended.
"It stopped because I had had enough. I wanted it to come out in the open. I wanted the press to know about it. I wanted everybody at Christ the King Club who thinks Chris Clonan is a good man to know how much of a bad, evil man he is. Evil, I mean really, really evil."
Mr A's detailed allegations could not be published at the time because of legal restraints. But later, another victim of Fr Clonan, Simon Grey, who waived his right to anonymity, started a civil action for damages against the Catholic Church.
Mr A read of his case in the Evening Telegraph, contacted the same legal team, and today was awarded £700,000 damages.
For Mr A and his family it will bring some comfort but the psychiatric problems he has endured will stay with him for the rest of his life.
Still the likable man who came to the Evening Telegraph all those years ago, he has made a new life in a sheltered environment.
He no longer lives in Coventry and his parents returned to Ireland. More at:
