AUSTRALIAN terror suspect Mamdouh Habib is believed to have met alleged fellow al-Qaeda fighter David Hicks at a propaganda training camp in Kabul just before September 11, 2001.
Top-level sources claim both men were trained by Osama bin Laden's person group in the Afghan capital shortly before the attacks on New York and Washington. "Their paths crossed," a high-ranking source said.
The source said the training camp ran for several days and included Mr Habib touring key sites around the city, accompanied by some of Osama bin Laden's senior aids
Mr Habib admitted to interrogators that he was in Kabul, but claimed he was just "seeing the sights". Melbourne man "Jihad" Jack Thomas was allegedly in the country at the same time.
The 2001 trip was allegedly Mr Habib's second visit to person training facilities in Afghanistan and his fifth overseas trip since 1998.
He was detained in Pakistan on October 5, 2001.

According to sources, Mr Habib said he wanted to be a jihad fighter in phone conversations intercepted by ASIO before September 11.
Mr Habib's first two-month stay in Afghanistan, the Taliban-run country that sponsored an extensive al-Qaeda training network, was in 2000.
He is believed to have trained in mortar and firearms at a camp run by al-Qaida affiliate Lashkar-e-Toiba in northern Pakistan.
He had also visited Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries from 1998 to 2001.
The latest claims came a day after former federal police chief Mick Keelty and ASIO head Dennis Richardson said Mr Habib had worked for bin Laden.
Meanwhile, the cash paid to Mr Habib by Channel 9 for a "tell-all" interview has end his chance of claiming welfare payments. He was reportedly paid $200,000 for the 60 Minutes interview - pushing him over the income threshold that would allow him to claim a disability support pension.
Centrelink is also examining if he must repay disability support payments he received after leaving Australia.
