-------------------------- THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Indian Air Force is all set to induct more combat aircraft, mid-air refueling Aircraft and Advanced Jet Trainers into its fleet, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi said on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference at the Southern Air Command headquarters, Tyagi said the government had given clearance for the purchase of many more mid-air refueling Aircraft and over 100 Medium and heavy lift Helicopters. India currently operates fleets of the largest helicopter in the world, the Mi 26 Halo, of Russian origin.
Apart from this, process was on for the induction of many more Air Borne Early Warning and Control Systems (AWACS), and over 200 combat aircraft, he said.
Squadrons of Light Combat Aircraft manufactured at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) would also be inducted into the IAF shortly, he said adding Advanced Light attack Helicopters being built at HAL would also be added to IAF fleet besides adding Intermediary Jet Trainers and Medium Transport Aircrafts developed by HAL.
It was also planned to induct over 50 more Medium Transport Aircraft with a capacity to transport 15 to 20 tonnes. "Talks with a Russian company for the aircraft is on", he said.
On new air bases and upgradation programme, he said infrastructure facilities are rapidly being build across India, and also in certain Indian and foreign territories overseas.
On the Aero Space Command, he said the government has already initiated the project. Details are being worked on. It was originally planned to have the command at the Sohtern Air Command, he said adding "more players are involved now and the structure and the place for setting it up is being decided".

India is planning to set up a Strategic Aerospace Command to prepare for star wars and use space for network-centric warfare in future. Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Marshall S. P. Tyagi said an Aerospace Command has to be established to lay the groundwork to develop capability to degrade space weapons.
