Communism doesn't work in practice because it is vulnerable to greedy individuals and greedy neighboring countries. THAT is why it doesn't work, in its true form, in practice. Have you ever wondered WHY communism hasn't had the opportunity to grow? Admittedly, it is in part due to fascist countries like the USA working actively to keep communism from growing, but why is it so easy for them to do so? The answer is that a truly communist country will be vulnerable to every fascist country, in a military sense as well as a manipulative sense. Also, ever noticed that all pseudo-communist countries have dictators? That's because communism is vulnerable to greedy individuals.
It's sad, because in theory, communism is the best of all 'government' methods, but it has vulnerabilities that preclude it from successfully forming a stable society. There is no doubt a way to close those vulnerabilities by adding elements of democracy, but it will take a greater mind than mine to do so.
Note that I am not claiming that LOCAL communism cannot work (look at Jewish Kibbutzes (not sure of spelling), and some other cases), but at a national level, communism cannot exist on its own.
