Woman paraded naked in Orissa village

A Dalit woman has been paraded naked at a village in Orissa and beaten up mercilessly by five villagers over a land dispute.
The incident occurred at Kundapatana village in Jajpur district on 5 July 2006 but it came to light only after the victim's husband lodged a complaint with the local police much later.

There was reportedly a dispute over a piece of land between Narahari Sahu, the local village council chief and his neighbours. The neighbours -- Kahana Sahoo, Bhobi Sahoo, Paban Sahoo, Adhira Sahoo and Babu Sahoo -- rushed into Narahari's house and tried to rape his wife Urmila as she was alone at home.

According to Urmila, when she raised an alarm, they ripped off her clothes and paraded her naked through the village streets in broad daylight. When a few villagers tried to help Urmila, they were also beaten up by the five people.
The attackers also buttaulted Narahari's mother-in-law Sabitri Sahoo (60), who ran to her daughter's rescue after hearing screams for help.
Urmila alleged that the attackers also looted gold ornaments worth over Rs 50,000. Both the victims are undergoing treatment in a local hospital. All five attackers were arrested and produced before the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate, Jajpur.
This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred in Jajpur district. On 20 April 2006, a 35-year-old Dalit woman in the district's Rathia village was beaten up and paraded naked by four youths of the same village.
In another incident, a 50-year-old widow, Kamala Nayak and her son Ananta Nayak of the district's Kollasingh village were beaten up and paraded naked by some villagers on 10 November 2005.
