Once almost completely reliant on the North American marketplace, Indian BPO companies have made their mark in Europe; decreasing U.S. business share.

Tuesday, June 21, 2005 The Indian business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has made remarkable strides in winning business outside North America. This observation comes to mind after hearing D.K. Sareen, executive director of India's Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), state that Indian BPO recently made 98 percent of its revenues from North America, primarily the U.S..

By 2004, that number had shrunk to just over 61 percent. Meanwhile, Indian BPO made nearly 27 percent of its revenues from countries in the European Union (EU). Given that the EU figure was one percent during the previous decade, that's very rapid growth indeed. Sponsor Spot: Analytics tell you what, Morae shows you why. Nor is it over. Sareen's media statement indicated that "the effort would be to peg the North American market to somewhere in the vicinity of 50 percent in the long run," meaning that India, Inc. intends to grow its relative share of European BPO.

Interestingly, ESC figures showed that Indian BPO's share of Far Eastern business declined in 2004. That looks like an indication that regional Asian BPO (for example, from China, Vietnam, and the Philippines) is doing well enough to lock out Indian business. It's also what one would expect to see given predictions of China's eventual BPO dominance, at least in its own geography.
