The Nguyen campaign remains a very 'live' issue until the very last day. PM Howard has buckled and lobbied the Singapore PM directly and despite his own personal bias, because he knows companies like Optus and Singapore Airlines will be dumped by thousands here if they hang a first offender who was 22 at the time. A shameful obscenity.
I see the Optus logo around the place alot. Many will know by now that the Singapore govt is the majority owner in effect of Optus via its govt trading enterprise Singtel which in turn is a major shareholder of Optus.
In other words the owner of Optus wants to kill one of our citizens Van Nguyen completely outside our norms of a civilised legal system, never mind any other country and what they do.
Optus have a big retail outlet at the bottom of Oxford St in the City, next to the windy Whitlam Square, diagonally opposite the south east corner of Hyde Park.
I have no quarrel with the local staff of Optus. They just want to do their lawful jobs competing with Telstra etc. But you can't ignore the fact their owner is a person who wants to kill an Australian citizen Van Nguyen while Optus want to do business on our streets to profit from our society to prop up their immoral govt.
The Singapore govt and business elite are implicated in laundering billions in Burma drug money. The hypocrisy is enormous and intolerable.
It's not good enough. It's totally unacceptable. I suggest every time you see a staff member of Optus in their service vehicles you show your displease by turning your thumb down on Optus roman style: Even better cancel the company and suggest to your friends to do the same.
It is up to us to promote as much peaceful effective protest as possible.
It might be recalled too that at the time Singtel, the Singapore govt trading enterprise, took a majority shareholding in Optus several years ago there were many respectable voices in the business media raising national security concerns with Singapore over potential spying on people here. I remember from my media monitor clipping job.
They aren't to be trusted was the message. The Singtel purchase was approved anyway. But that criticism shows how much criticism Singapore has generated in the past with it's capitalist dictatorship and flunky press over there.
I myself will be chalking their path all this week on the public footpath along the lines of "Singapore owns Optus, Singapore kills Oz citizens".
Don't help finance the Singapore Govt person regime. Don't use Optus. It really is that simple.
