That has ALWAYS been an issue since Australians stopped bashing people for speaking other languages on trains back in the 50s. The immigrants of the 60s were not allowed to be from Arab countries due to the White Australia Policy so we had Greeks, Italians and other European nationalities including Poms. When people come here from their home countries, they try to make Australia the way it was back in the old country. That has happened since the First Fleet. Witness rabbits and foxes for example. They aren't native Australians!
However, the point is that people of a certain nationality (pick the name of your choice) tend to group together when they arrive here. After all, they don't really know the area and need the help of others who know their ways to get them up to speed. That is fairly obvious. What ends up being the case is that each nationality tends to make a ghetto of their own nationality and then when they ARE up to speed start trying to make things THEIR way in Australia as it was where they came from. People living here tend to get a bit upset about that, of course.

We need the American example. If they want to come here, they need to know about Australian history, customs, way of life or go back and that includes boat people. They need to speak English fluently, too. Honest refugees would be the only exception of course. If those wishing to come who aren't refugees cannot speak English, don't know about Australian history or customs, they are denied and that is that.
If you understand things in the country you are going to live in from now on, then you are less likely to be peeed off that not all the people there do things the way they did in your home country. After all, were I to move to a Muslim ruled country, I am sure they wouldn't look kindly towards me having an alcoholic drink outside my own home!
