When Catholic Church officials refuse to release the names of priests who molested children, they call it "privileged information."
Everyone else knows it for what it really is: old- fashioned stonewalling.
Committing grievous crimes and then covering them up for decades doesn't bestow privilege on anyone. So it would best if the secret keepers stopped pretending their stand is based on high-minded principle.
Victims and their families, naturally, view this tragedy a betrayal of trust, as dramatically shown in a recent series of News Journal articles. Unfortunately, in Delaware the legal system failed them too
Delaware's statutes of limitations worked against the victims. They have two years from the time of the abuse to file legal action. Considering the coverup and the social pressure on the children and their families, that is a woefully short time. Delaware's Legislature should amend that as soon as possible.
The state's top law enforcement officer also failed the victims. Attorney General M. Jane Brady opened a limited inquiry into complaints of molestation. She made no effort to determine whether Diocese of Wilmington officials broke the law in covering up any crimes. No details of the inquiry were released.
Contrast that with Lynne Abraham, Philadelphia's district attorney. When she confronted stonewalling officials, she convened a grand jury, conducted a thorough investigation and released the details in a 420-page report. Her actions were criticized by those same officials, who vainly tried to hide behind a weak claim of anti- Catholicism. The report, as controversial as it was, served as a catharsis for the hundreds of thousands of Catholics in the Philadelphia archdiocese.

Catholics in the Diocese of Wilmington will have no such closing. The scandal will fester as long as the stonewallers have their way.
