| # Back in the Middle Ages, the zealot Muslim warrior offered his Infidel captive a choice - by holding a scimitar in one hand, and the Koran in the other. What real choice is there, if you're about to get your head lopped off? Yet this is a commentary on most religions; the lack of rational argument, and empirical proof. As most adherents of a Faith are born into it, and learn the Truth by indoctrination (unquestioned belief), they can only convert others by threat. Supernatural religion appeals to the most basic of instincts: self-preservation, and hence desire for Eternal Life. This can lead to the ultimate delusion, martyrdom for one's faith. Yet such religion also involve the second-most powerful instinct: reproduction. This can be distorted, via repression, into the most bizarre customs. The act of copulation reminds us, unfortunately, of our animal origins; hence, the urge is suppressed, puritanised, sublimated, etc, so that it is transformed into divine status (but suppression can also lead to sadism). Women are regarded as divine, but also as evil temptresses; a distortion of their humanity and equality. Religion has good aspects, as a communal unifying force, but fanaticism is to be deplored. Let us not judge too harshly someone caught up in a traumatic situation, and trying to get out of it. What would you do in the same circumstances? |
