"The college is Australia's oldest Islamic school, with 1200 students across two campuses from prep to year 12. Clbuttes are mostly co-educational, but from year 5 parents can choose gender-segregated clbuttes. In practice, most parents prefer mixed clbuttes.

The staff is also mixed. It is school policy that not more than half be from a Muslim background. The non-Muslim female staff get around the hijab question by wearing hats or berets.

School director Salah Salman said this policy was important to keep a balance with Australian society. "We don't offer an Islamic education, we offer a general education in an Islamic setting. We have about 50 full-fee-paying international students, often with parents who have come to Australia for their own education.

"But you don't have to be a Muslim, we've got a handful who aren't. Anyone can come. We have all sorts of ethnic backgrounds and some students are Shiite Muslims as well."

His school is one of just 13 in Victoria to offer the globally recognised International Baccalaureate, which puts it in the company of some of the most prestigious, such as Wesley College, St Leonards, Methodist Ladies College and Geelong Grammar. About half the year 12 students take the IB and last year, three obtained enter scores of more than 99 and 11 recorded scores over 90.

That is where the comparison with the other schools end. Most of King Khalid's sporting facilities are in adjacent council parks and the school's main building was the former Merlynston state primary school, sold off by the Kennett government. Money comes from state and federal governments plus fees. Year 12 costs $3800 plus a $2000 levy for IB.

Mr Saleh said the school did get a $200,000 grant from Saudi Arabia when it first set up its primary school in 1983, but that is the only foreign money it has received. "I don't think most Australian Muslims want anything other than the Australian system of government," he says.

"We might not always agree with government policies, but it is the best system. That is what our students learn."

And what my kids have learnt in government schools as well.

It's not perfect, we can improve it, through legitimate political action, but we shouldn't allow anyone to tear down it's principles of open democratic tolerant diversity of views. Anyone who claims only THEIR views are right, and everyone else must adopt them, is a danger.
