Model gives a tearful apology to Muslims for wearing burqa 11-26-2005 9:06:00 PM GMT

Michelle Leslie, an Australian model jailed in Indonesia for ecstasy possession, apologised to Muslims on Friday for offending them by wearing traditional Islamic dress during her court ordeal.

Leslie, catwalk and underwear model, broke her silence at a tearful press conference on Friday, rejecting accusation that she had staged a sham conversion to Islam in order to gain sympathy from Indonesian judges in Bali.

"As for the hurtful allegations that I pretended to be a Muslim, let me say first of all it was never my intention to offend anyone in the Muslim community. I am a Muslim and I do understand the significance of wearing the burqa. I should have thought more carefully about wearing it in that situation and I apologise for any offence I have caused. It was an extreme situation," she said.

During her trial, Leslie, 24, wore a full-length burqa and a headscarf, only to emerge on her release after three months in jail wearing a tight-fitting singlet.

She returned to Sydney on Tuesday.

"But now that I'm back here I still don't believe it's safe for me to do so because there's still a number of other young Australians in Indonesian jails, and I simply won't take the risk of making it worse for them than it already is," she added, without elaborating on what kept her from telling what happened.
