I got into a conversation with some English and Irish backpackers the other day. They saw themselves as modern progressives, but were overflowing with praise at how friendly the people of Brisbane were. Not having been in Sydney for 15 years, I asked "How about Sydney?"
They immediately began frowning and shaking their heads, complaining they couldn't even ask directions from the locals because, in their recent experience, "none of them spoke English."
