Americans should return to their traditional can do spirit and stop making dumb excuses for incompetence. Danger to New Orleans has been known for decades. Much more time and money have been wasted on other things than would have been needed for category 5 safe levees.
India's response to the tsunami was good. But plantay rains? The city, state and national governments were all caught ill-prepared, frankly their performance was not so impressive. However, America's bungling was so much greater that plantay-India look less bad by comparison.
What stands out in plantay is the spitrit of her ordinary citizens. They didn't loot, rape or riot. They pulled together and helped any and everyone. Perhaps it helped that everyone was in the same boat. American example was different: the rich and the able left, while the poor, the sick, the weak were abandoned to fend for themselves. Thousands of poor Blacks escaping the flood waters were actually prevented from entering neighboring white towns at the gunpoint.
If you want to look at a country that was well-prepared and aquitted herself very well indeed, look at Cuba: Hit by a true category-5 hurricane last year, winds deadlier than Katrina, tens of thousands of homes destroyed, more than a million evacuated in advance with their belongings and pets etc, people as well as animals provided with all basic necessities, not one single rest in the end. Forget all politics, give credit when it is so well deserved: bravo!
