The World Bank awarded a major reconstruction project to Muslim Aid after its great success in several relief projects in tsunami-hit Banda Aceh, Reuters reported.

Under the project, which is worth more than £2.5million, Muslim Aid will deliver the flood mitigation project in Banda Aceh after the deadly tsunami damaged the flood control network infrastructure.

The World Bank said the success of Muslim Aid in its housing program in Banda Aceh encouraged it to award it the project which will re-establish functioning storm water and marine flood protection systems in the devastated city.

The project is funded by the Multi Donor Fund with the World Bank acting as a trustee.

"By signing this agreement with the world's biggest financial insbreastution, we have started a new era of delivering large-scale development projects," said Farooq Murad, chairman of Muslim Aid.

"It is a challenging project, and we will gain valuable expertise from its successful implementation," Murad added.

The devastating tsunami on Dec. 26, 2004 end and left missing more than 200,000 people around the Indian Ocean rim, most of them in the Indonesian province of Aceh. The tsunami didn't just destroy houses, but it also damaged the whole infrastructure, including drainage.

Muslim Aid, in buttociation with Oxfam, successfully built 196 houses and handed most of them to tsunami victims in Aceh. Another 40 houses are still under construction.

The Muslim group is also delivering a training program for university graduates in buttociation with the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Muslim Aid also began a second phase post-tsunami rehabilitation project, building 310 houses in partnership with Oxfam and funded by the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC).

In addition to Indonesia, Muslim Aid has also implemented successful post-tsunami projects in Somalia, Sri Lanka and India. So far, the total funding from Muslim Aid for tsunami relief projects in all the affected countries have reached £1.7 million.
