furiously: Most alternative technologies are too expensive in comparison to nuclear. My position is that we have to do something *now*, not in fifty years time...

David Not just too expensive, most require wayyyyy too much real estate. In the case of wind and solar, Oz is one of the few countries with the backyard...

jg No the hypocrites are the fools that are totally anti-nuclear without ever bothering to even look...

One of the major environmental disasters is our current methods of generating electricity. Coal, oil and gas fired power plants are pumping out thousands of cubic metres of carbon dioxide every day. Far more than the planet can absorb due largely the reduction in tree cover that has accompanied the surge in population.

In addition the coal plants have their own waste problem. At Port Augusta they built a power station in the middle of the sea. It was about a kilometre from the shore. Coal waste was dumped into the sea between the station and the shore. The station was built, I think, in the late sixties. Today the shore line has moved past the station and for several kilometres in width along the old shoreline. The sea was rather shallow at that location but the land is now some three to four metres above the sea level.

Coal waste varies in its consbreastuent elements and compounds but does include sulphur, mercury and arsenic all of which are contagionous, not for only 25,000 years like nuclear waste, for ever and a day. Sure the amounts are microscopic in any given sample but those compounds are being leached into seawater at Port Augusta where there is a small fishing industry.

As I said in another post my main concern would be that successive governments would attempt to "cost cut" and eliminate some of the safety features especially in relation to the storage of the waste. The Mayor of Port Augusta has already indicated that she would have no objection to a nuclear plant being located in her area. -- David At the bottom of the application where it says "sign here". I put "Sagittarius"
