| cathryn Honestly I don't know how to adequately categorise "equality". If you are speaking from within a relationship it probably means inputs that engender mutual respect and satisfaction. From society it probably means equal rights to property. The civil code in Indonesia within marriage stipulates equal legal competence but mandates that the role of teh husband is teh breadwinner and the role of the woman is head within the household. The husband's duty is to earn and the wife's duty is to be frugal. Mutual respect is compulsory by law :). The property accrued during the marriage is joint by law, that which was brought to the relationship or comes in by inheritence or gift remains separate. In the case of multiple wives, it is split equally during the coverture of the various marriages. The part which lacks free choice is that it is criminal to cohabit without being married, and criminal (despite consent) to commit adultery. It is a system that has a very low divorce rate, especially for Catholics for whom divorce is forbidden and the state applies the religious law of the person's freely chosen religion...(there are 5 to choose from - atheism is forbidden also) |
