Of course you hear nothing on the news as it was not in America or England. Here are some facts. When the Spanish arrived in the Philippines in 1521 they found an Animistic and Muslim Population. Muslim Filipinos got their religion from earlier Traders who went to the Philippines. The Spanish Catholics had it easy converting the Animistic population. They persecuted the Muslims who then went to Southern Mindanao, ( As far as possible away from Manila) Those Filipino Muslims had always been the poorest of the poor Mostly because of the economic conditions did they argue that they would be better off as a separate Islamic nation, not only comprising large parts of the southern Philippines, but also Northern Borneo. Since the Philippines became independent, they have stopped persecuting the Muslim Population. As a result there are large moderate Muslim Communities all over the Philippines who live in peace and support the Government. However, the poor in the south became more fanatical. For the same economic reasons they have large pockets of fanatical Communists opposed to the Philippine Government. It is not a cultural war as they are all Filipinos but with a different Religion. In fact, the Philippines has the most successful multi cultural society, comprising a core of Malay People, Negritos and Aetas who mixed with the Indonesians, Chinese, Melanesians, Polynesians, Micronesians, Spanish and Americans. The Americans had a Naval Base At subic bay and the Clark Airforce base in the Philippines. To keep those bases there, they went so far as supporting the liquidateous and corrupt Philippine President, Ferdinant Marcos. With the help of American businesses, Marcos plundered the Philippines. As a small Example: An American businessman goes to Manila with a proposal to build a luxury Swimming pool in the middle of a slum. It all was done on credit with 10% going into the Swiss bank account of Marcos. Westinghouse which started to build a nuclear Power plant for Billions of Pesos is to this day banned in the Philippines. Mostly as a result of this plunder, The Philippines have to repay 40% of their total revenue on Foreign debts, That is the reason for their poor economic performance and the poorest of the poor turn to Fanatical oppositions.
