Well, he claims he 'feels our pain' even though he doesn't pay to fill his commonwealth car, and he claims that people talk to him all the time about the difficulties high fuel prices cause, so he could do something about it by simply REMOVING the DOUBLE TAXATION on petrol by scrapping the GST on top of the fuel excise.. but instead, he reverts to form and BARE FACED LIES that there is 'nothing he can do;
That is complete BULLpoo.
Instead of INCREASING taxes via the regressive GST he could REDUCE the tax gouge by removing the DOUBLE TAXING of petrol; GST paid on excise.. a TAX ON A TAX! B^p

That WAS the intention of the fuel EXCISE, to price petrol at a level that would not be so cheap as to encourage greater use of non-renewable fossil fuels, but would encourage the development of energy alternatives through parity pricing.
The government coffers benefit as a byproduct, and the funds generated could be, but aren't, used to invest in new energy alternatives.
But when the GST was introduced, it became a 10% tax on the RETAIL price (production costs+ Oil co margin+distribution+ Servo+ EXCISE)
A TAX on A TAX! It is unconscionable! it is FRAUDULENT!
AND it is mbuttively REGRESSIVE.. hurts the poorest hardest!
Thus, our pump price of 139.4 per litre is made up of
Oil company, distributor and retailer: 15.1
Howard's Federal Excise: 37.3 (25%) ================================================= Add those 3 together: 126.8 cents litre =================================================
but then, having whacked the excise on, boosting the retail price by 25%, Howard whacks another 10%, the GST, ON TOP OF THE EXCISE-INFLATED PRICE!

Howards 10 % GST : 12.6 cents per litre.
That means that, over all, 49.99 cents out of every litre of petrol is DIRECTLY ADDED By JOHN WINSTON HOWARD..
Who then has the f***ing GALL to pee in our pockets about 'feeling out pain' and lie in our faces "I wish I had a magic wand.. but there's nothing I can do!"

Well there you go.
You see IF , and it's a bloody immense if, the government actually invested the Excise in alternative energies, they would have an argument.. and because the development of alternative energies, AND the careful management of fossil fuel resources (reducing consumption by becoming energy efficient) is encouraged when petrol prices are higher.. I do not wish to see us follow the Cheap Oil strategy of the USSA, which has led to profligate consumption and greedy waste of fuel (gas guzzling SUV's power operated arse lifters.. etc etc)

And so I have not argued for the complete removal of the fuel excise.. but for a much more moderate course, eliminating the excessive impost.. the tax on a tax.. removing the regressive GST!
As always there are consequences for any choice.. the balance is what is critical.
But for Howard to bullpoo us like this is unforgivable, especially as he is completely INERT in dealing with the coming fuel crisis.. something I have warned pbuttionately about for YEARS!
So much so that those who will not listen, or do not care, accuse me of repeating myself! ;-)
