Surely that is exactly the sort of situation the BNP could exploit?
I.e. no more Muslim immigration.
How do you think the Muslims would react to that?
Didn't we give up control over immigration to the EU?
All of which (incl the immigration bit) are completely at odds with current policy, and which would raise a huge outcry from both the Muslims and much of the left.
Dare I ask?
Thus far the West is generally being very weak over this, the Bush administration included.
I came across this gem yesterday, a product of the "Muslim Action Committee" formed in Britain after the cartoon row flared up:
It contains this statement of intent:
`` Statement of Intent 1. Why are we here? (a) To show our feelings and anger about the insult to our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). (b) To say, ãEnough is enough!ä The rights and protection enjoyed by others should be extended to Muslims. (c) To invite and encourage a genuine debate based upon the principles of civility. 2. What is the way forward? (a) To amend the Press Complaints Commission Code of Practice with the following 3 changes: (Section 1, Accuracy, new clause) (iii) The Press must take care not to publish reckless and malicious expressions insulting or desecrating anyoneâs creed or conscience, including pictures. (Section 12, Discrimination, addition of Îinsultingâ in clause (i)) (i) The press must avoid prejudicial, insulting or pejorative reference to an individual's race, colour, religion, gender, loveual orientation or to any physical or mental illness or disability. (Section 12, Discrimination, addition new clause (iii)) (iii) The press must avoid any publication or reference leading to provocation, incitement to violence or hatred based upon an individualâs race or religion. (b) A full apology by the Danish paper Jyllands-Posten and all others who re-printed the caricatures for offending 1.6 billion Muslims, and á to hand over the rights of the cartoons to Muslims; á to publish one saying of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) every day for 1 year, promoting civility, as selected by the Muslim Action Committee; á the proceeds from the defamatory caricatures to be given in trust to childrenâs charities. (c) For the world leaders, media, politicians and all people to consider and sign up to the ÎProclamation of Global Civilityâ.''
I would not be surprised, given the way things are going, if the PCC adopts some or all of these amendments. Note that they want more than just an apology from JP, but they want JP to publish stuff the MAC chooses for a year!
