ISTM Aramis is pointing out a likely reaction to your suggestions should they be proposed by any current mainstream politician. About the only politicians who could get away with it at this point are in the BNP, and that's 'cause they'd be mostly ignored. Though possibly the recent behaviour of some Muslims both in Britain and across the world (behaviour which is doing far more to portray Muslims as intolerant and violent fanatics than any cartoon possibly could) might change matters.
Interesting reports coming from Australia mind you, where John Howard has told Muslims that if they want Sharia law they should go live somewhere else!
ISTM the nutty "Muslims" are a minority of those calling themselves Muslim in the UK at this time, but a sufficiently large one to cause trouble...
basilisk?
I was reading Bernard Lewis's book "The Crisis of Islam" recently. It suggests that there are traditions within Islam, some very old, that are more tolerant and less violent than the wahabbi Islam and other contemporary schools that currently seem to have a lot of influence.
I've also seen suggestions that just about all the Muslim organisations we hear of in Britain are linked to, if not part of, the Muslim Brotherhood, but they don't necessarily represent ordinary Muslims.
Then I see polls showing 40% backing the introduction of Sharia law into predominantly Muslim areas, and I wonder.
