Studies have shown that smoking during pregnancy accounts for between 20 and 30 per cent of low birth weight babies. Babies of smoking mothers are on average 200g (7oz) lighter than those of non-smoking mothers. Although there is little evidence on the reasons why pregnant teenagers smoked, the Royal College of Midwives said their members had come across girls who believed it would make labour less painful. "They think a smaller baby will be easier to push out," said a spokesman. Pregnant teenagers are deliberately smoking in the hope of giving birth to smaller babies, making labour less painful, a Government minister claimed yesterday. Caroline Flint, the public health minister, said that official warnings about the links between smoking and underweight babies had been understood by prospective teenage mothers.
Trend in smoking during the pregnancy period is attributed in western society due totheir reason of thinking to get relief from the stress of pain for teenagers first delivery which links smoking with underweight babies amonst the eudcated prospective teenage mothers lot who have understood the resons for having less pain. Those uneducated lot wants to get easily, get over the pains they suffer or likely to suffers as explained to them by their teenager friends. However the efforts must be made to train the mother to have right choice to make their child more healthy. The underweight is less painful than average weigh child is misquotated concept in the minds of teenage mothers, resorting to unwarranted tactis is more injurious to the new infant.Child is likely to get sensitive to epidemic like jaundice other disease which can cripple the child life

Well I'm happy to say that although I smoked through all five of my pregnancies, none of them have ever been ill, and none of them have allergies, and if they were underweight, it didn't show. The only one who was slightly underweight was my first, but it was to be expected as I was so sick with hormones that I lost two stone while I was actually pregnant. OTOH I was an underweight baby and have reams of allergies and my mother has never touched a ciggie. I can agree about the labour pain though - regardless of the size of the baby, the labour is the same - even when I miscarried at 14 week (baby had spina bifida due to folic acid defecit in my diet - I was vegetarian at the time), the labour was ten hours and extremely painful. I'm susprised that the ever-loving and caring state, which provides free contraception, free morning after pills and free ends, all without seeking the child's parents consent, cannot be bothered to provide girls with pregnancy and birth education. Shame on them.
