I've made the point that politics determines which scientific ideas are developed and which are ignored.
Actually this happens from late high school onwards. A bright student who can pursue any career s-he wants usually checks out the rewards inherent in career options. Pure science pays poorly, so that takes care of the best and brightest.
Those who do go into science look at the career options available. Nuclear weapons scientists are obscure for security and political reasons. Solar cell scientists are the flavour of the month, they are famous and idolised by society. If a weapons scientist makes an important discovery it is clbuttified top secret and only a handful of people ever know about it in his-her lifetime. If a solar cell scientist makes an important discovery it is all over the popular media as well as in the scientific press. If a scientist tells people at a party s-he designs weapons of mbutt destruction, in the present political climate s-he may be tarred and feathered. If a scientist says they are developing new clean, green solar energy sources they are feted.
So, which branch of science is likely to proceed more rapidly at present? Not because there are discoveries to be made, but because politics plays a part in science at every turn.
