I know a fair bit about the current situation in Sydney. This is not a racial issue, but rather a religious one. The root cause is the drastically different position of women in Islamic and Australian society. Islamic societies impose a veil (hijab-chador) on their women and mostly keep them at home. Australian women are independent and free. In the eyes of moslem men, this makes them "whores."
In 2000, Sydney was terrorised by a series of gang rapes of Australian women by gangs of moslem men (called the Bilal Skaf rapes by some media). These moslem men would rape Australian women and would say things such as "you australian whore, you asked for this, you deserve this..." This outraged the nation. It is one thing to treat your own women like animals, and it is another to target the women of the local community because they do not adhere to your own medieval dress code.

This outrage against moslems is shared by most Englishmen (I have family in England) and moslem atbreastudes there are similar. Instead of making an effort to buttimilate and modernise, they resist modernity and insist on living by a 7th century code of laws that is incompatible with modern civilised society. In 2000, Pakistani and Bangladeshi moslems of the Bradford-Leeds area rioted in Britain's worst riots for decades. Why is this such a consistent pattern - of moslems refusing to modernise and integrate and instead nurturing a deep hatred for the countries that let them in and gave them a chance at a better life?
There is a limit to any country's patience. I think moslems have done more than enough to cross that limit. Australia let these people in (inspite of the religious difference), gave them an opportunity for a better life, did not impose our ways on them. But in return we got the Bilal Skaf rapes.
The terror angle has also really hurt Australian sentiments. Moslem persons have targetted Australian tourists in Bali, and recently a terror plot for a nuclear power plant was uncovered last month. How much aggression can a country take before it retaliates? There is a limit to how much intolerance we can tolerate.
