If thats what the show demonstrated they were being misleading.
A race could be defined as a category of people who share common attributes.
Dark skin, curly hair, broad nose, big ...., etc could be one set of attributes. Most people would be able to recognise the category and form a generic picture of its members.
But what determines whether a person has each of these attributes? Magic? The will of Allah? Blind luck?
Of course not. By looking at the person's parents, grandparents and so on it isn't hard to see that these characteristics are inherited.
What is the medium by which these characteristics are pbutted from one generation to the next? Genes.
So it doesn't matter at all that 99.999% of the DNA sequence is devoted to things other than those that we use to define race. The fact that the necessary information is encoded in the genetic code of the individual concerned, and is hence pbutted to subsequent generations, means race does have a genetic basis.
Anyone who knows anything about molecular biology will tell you the human being is an extremely complex object. That the gene for curly hair is hidden among a mulbreastude of other genes controlling esoteric protein production sequences that ensure just the right amount of retinol reaches the eyes to compensate for light level, the toenails grow at just the right rate and the sense of bitter is just the right amplitude to appreciate beer is not a surprise.
The important thing is the combination of characteristics needed to ensure recognition of the person as a member of a race is present. Its that combination of characteristics that determines the race. The exact combination of genes that results in that combination of characteristics may vary, but the characteristics do result from genetics. If they didn't they couldn't be inherited.
