Thjere had been complications and the mother had been kept at the hospital. According to her mother she had been in the care of her maternal grandmother and aunt, neither of whom was very conversant in English.
The "welfare" had arrived and allegedly said that they were taking her to see her mother in hospital, but had then taken her instead to the mission. The grandmother had wanted to come, but was told she couldn't.

When the mother returned a week later, she was unable to establish who, precisely had taken the child or obtain any information. Eventually she was simply told that the child had been "taken into care" and that it was contrary to the law for them to pbutt on information about her whereabouts but that they would pbutt on letters and gifts. My student said that none ever came though, despite her mother butturing her that she'd sent them to the nominated post box.
It's possible of course that had they had a little more insight into the workings of the bureaucracy she or the father might have tracked her down earlier but her literacy was limited and in those days, the Aboriginals tended to do as they were told by authority. And in any event, the father died relatively young from emphasema and much of the mother's energy was expended caring for him.
