I've note that few companies no longer run apprenticeship or traineeship schemes at all and the few that do only run tiny schemes. These schemes cost little money but they have fallen by the wayside whereas they were once matters of pride and neccesity. First year apprenticess cost little money and become usefull after 6 months. After 1 year they are very usefull. They also add a sense of pride to the tradesmen or professionals teaching them.
We have a trade shortage supposedly holding back the mineral exports industry. In part a lack of government spending and fear of deficits has held back that infrastructure (transport docks etc) development too much. However NSW and Victoria have been spending vast amounts of infrastructure to accomodate their rising populations due to immigration: 1000 per week in Sydney and 500 in Melbourne alone. What we really have is industry and Government that has gotten too lazy and flacid to develop habits of training because the government simply seeks out immigrants as an knee jerk response.
So if you are a CEO you cut your training schemes and when you need people or need to cut labour costs you hbuttle for immigration to get you out of the hole you created. It also creates demand for your products in some cases. It is a short sighted view based entirely on peronal benefit. The CEO is doing quite well and his children are no doubt in nice schools and have nothing to fear.
The doctors shortage is caused by the AMA which tries and succedes in preventing 'to many medical student places' that will create too many GPs and doctors and perceived compebreastion.
Immigration allows the Government and Companies to cover up their own lack of responsible planning. It takes 4 years to train someone but an immigrant can be obtained within a few months.
It also means we don't develop labour saving technology and doom many of our children to medicore jobs.
