CON Killing anyone is a tragedy. On those grounds, I would argue that Wood should be released.
PRO On the other hand, Australia played a role in the US invasion of Iraq. That invasion caused the rest of 140,000 Iraqi civilians. On those grounds, it could be argued that his end is just a small part of the penance that Australia should undergo.
CON On the other hand, Douglas Wood's family have not personally (as opposed to their guilt from being Australian )done anything against the Iraqis. The distress that his end would cause is unjustified. So, on those grounds, he should be released.
PRO On the other hand, by participating and profiting from the illegal occupation of Iraq, one could argue that Wood is guilty. I would imagine that the freedom fighters who have apprehended him would use that argument.
CON Wood is in a position of extreme powerlessness. As attested to by the video showing 2 rifles aimed at his head. One should not kill or hurt the powerless.
PRO The US had and has no compunctions about that as evidenced by their actions in Abu Gharib and Guantanomo Bay.
Summary:
There are arguments for and against. However, I hope that he is released.
