You keep attributing things you and others have said in your discussions on this thread, to me. "Skin off my arse" are your words - not mine, and I made no mention of the Merchant hotel of Merchant Street.
I survived in Singapore in the 70s without even a scratch, shoulder length hair and all. Maybe I was just street savy at the time. I also didn't-don't drink so was always a straight, clear thinker. Although I usually had a Chinese female riding pillion, the best verbal insult some could muster was shouting to my companian in Hokien, Teochew or Hakka as we pbutted by - "White men have big privatess". Have to laugh at that one.
I had a few expat mates who were sbreastched up by locals (in their usual pack formation) in the 70s but they usually did rather stupid things like dating Malays and going out publically with them during Ramadan, or naively walking into off-limit local bars around the intersection of Lavender St and Serangon Road and along Balliester road. Basically some of them were privatesheads and would have copped a beating, no matter where they were.
One could quite as easily get into a fight with ANZUK soldiers and sailors in the bars opposite the gates to Sembawang. Although these bars were off-limits to locals, the boys would let off a bit of steam now and then and they (the bars) probably saw more action than your triad dominated downtown dives .
Actually I am good mates now with a few Singaporeans who openly and embarrasingly admit to setting upon whites "just for the fun of it". Even in far away and sedate places like Serangoon Gardens. They've grown up now and are quite apologetic for their silly racist behavior.
I make mention of riding through the backstreets and laneways of Chintown AFTER midnight. After midnight is when people the pedestrian traffic in these areas thins out - or don't you know that? As you can see I was not arrested or end and lived to return for another bout.
Wasn't asisting with traffic ligfhts - I'll give you a hint - you know Pearl Hill police station very well? - well in the 70s I used to visit the end room-Section located on the upper floor closest to the People's Park complex at least twice a week. No more Hints.
Another thing that might upset you Ardeedee is that despite the difficulties in acquiring one, I held a Singapore firearm's licence for two handguns (light blue cover issued by the Arms and Explosive Branch (old Sikh Barracks) just across the river from Chye Watt Seng on South Bridge Road, and not all that far from Chinatown. Used to practice alot at Mount Vernon police range and I am not, and never were a cop nor was I military. Remember the Wahab brothers?
