I've seen it in practice and it's disgusting the way the "guest workers" are expected to work 24x7, and how condescending Singaporeans talk about how they are doing them a favour (by treating them like slaves it seems?).
I especially love how Singaporeans bring the nannies with their kids out to dinner at a restaurant, then completely ignore their children and force the poor nanny to work through the whole dinner looking after the kid ... is that what you mean by treating them like family?
Whenever I hear senile minister Lee talk about "Asian values" I can't help but think of this blatant exploitation and how the next generation of Singaporeans are being brought up to believe such exploitation is normal.
And for all the guest workers they are happy to import for a couple of years (at slave wages), Singapore still doesn't have the decency to accept a single refugee fleeing persecution to reside in the country! Another example of "Asian values" I suppose?
I'm sure there are some, but I can honestly say I've yet to meet an Australian who "longs" to go back to that sterile swamp.
